Sustainable tourism in a nature reserve?
The answer: electric.

A boat with colorful nautical design and life rings around the sides on a calm river, surrounded by lush green trees and hills in the background.

A solar-powered passenger catamaran has been developed in Spain's Montes Obarenes Nature Reserve. It will transport tourists across the River Ebro quietly and without emitting any emissions. The aim was to protect the sensitive ecosystem while creating a reliable, economically viable solution.

The 15-metre-long converted catamaran can accommodate 60 passengers, who can enjoy a quiet, sustainable ride surrounded by nature. The 40 solar panels on the roof charge a 60 kWh battery storage system from MG Energy.

These panels generate more energy than the catamaran consumes.

The entire system architecture was developed in close collaboration with Fischer Panda. All elements, from the Fischer Panda electric drives and battery integration to the solar panels, were coordinated to work seamlessly together as an intelligent overall system.

  • Minimal maintenance is required.

  • Thanks to solar panels, hardly any additional shore power is required.

  • Emission-free and quiet.

This impressive project demonstrates how technology, environmental compatibility and economic efficiency can be harmonised.

The largest passenger boat in the Basque Country goes electric

A blue and white hybrid solar-powered boat named 'Mitona Julián II' docked at a marina, with other boats and a cityscape in the background.

The family-run company Motoras de Isla has been taking visitors to the popular island of Santa Clara near San Sebastián since 1942.

To create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative, the excursion boat has been converted into a hybrid model.

The existing engines were supplemented with an electric drive system from Fischer Panda.

These additional electric motors enable quiet, emission-free manoeuvring, which is particularly useful in the port of San Sebastián.

Solar panels and wind turbines are used to charge the batteries that power the electric motors. With room for 150 passengers, the 18-metre ship now has the largest capacity in the Basque Country, while also sending a strong signal in favour of climate-friendly tourism.
