Introduction Omega Grey

Omega Grey combines sustainability, intelligence, and a new quality standard into one electric propulsion system for boats.
This unique merge allows to shape the urgently needed change in the marine industry towards more safety and sustainability.

The electric propulsion system is designed for boats and yachts ranging from 90kW up to stunning 350kW. The system is scalable, typical boat sizes are 30ft (9m) to 90ft (27m).

The founding of Omega Grey

The two founders Christian Ophoff and Stefan Strauß met through an engineering services project for an electric yacht builder.
Over the course of time, they decided to expand their collaboration as they complement each other in their strengths and skills.

With united forces, they developed a complete solution for electric propulsion systems together.

What started as an idea back in 2020, became reality in 2021 and the company Omega Grey was founded in Darmstadt, Germany.

The two founders seek for a suitable alternative to conventional combustion propulsions. In the times of global warming, the reasons for a change are obvious: Conventional ships using fossil fuels have a negative impact on the marine ecosystem due to high emissions, load noises and the pollution from exhaust fumes, oil or fuel.

Founder and CEO Christian Ophoff states:

“Electric propulsion systems can provide considerable relief for the environment. The systems currently available on the market still show significant potential for improvement in terms of intelligent energy management, user-friendliness and safety. This is where we come in.”

Regarding this market gap, Omega Grey decided to design its system based on the automotive standard to ensure the highest efficiency, safety and quality. With many years of experience in the automotive industry, both founders have a broad understanding of this standard.

Founder and CTO Stefan Strauß explains:

“All of the components meet the highest standards in terms of waterproofing, vibration resistance and durability. Due to the increased use of sensors, critical system conditions can be detected earlier and countermeasures can be initiated.”

Digitalizing the boating experience

The central control unit, the OG Connect Module, is one of the self-developed components and acts as the brain of the system. It connects all components - from the powerful batteries to the strong and reliable motor - to one smart solution.

This setup allows to provide completely new features, such as smart energy management, range prediction, predictive maintenance, and failure analysis. As a result, the boating and customer experience can be improved.

Green Boating

In addition of the automotive standard and the intelligent and digital features, Omega Grey’s system enables increased sustainability. With this combination, the trend and need for sustainability and digitalization is realized in one system.

Christian Ophoff states:

”Electric boat owners and passengers can fully enjoy the boating experience and cruise completely quiet, odorless and emission-free through the water.”

Thanks to the long living components and the reduced maintenance, the operating costs are much lower compared to conventional propulsion.

The two founders are delighted to announce that in 2022 the first two yachts will be ready to go.
